Modern Mississauga presents Ask The City - Why is the sidewalk being replaced on Eglinton between Hwy 10 and Creditview?

Modern Mississauga and the City of Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Ask the City.”
We’ll share relevant information here and answer your questions about our city.

Today’s question is about the construction work on Eglinton between Hwy 10 and Creditview.

The city appears to have initiated construction/demolition work on a large swath of area along Eglinton Road, between Hurontario St. and Creditview Rd. It seems that over 4 km of concrete sidewalks are being needlessly demolished and replaced with asphalt.
I am a resident of the area and can attest to the fact that there was nothing wrong with those concrete sidewalks.

Can you explain why it’s being replaced?

The construction on the sidewalk is for installation of a new multi-use trail for pedestrians and cyclists. Mississauga residents can enjoy the City’s cycling network which includes more than 400 kilometers of on-road bike lanes, boulevard multi-use trails, off-road trails as well as roadways that have posted bike route signs that are considered “bicycle friendly.”

The new multi-use trail is asphalt as this is the preferred surface for cycling and is the City’s standard treatment for multi-year trails. The trail is significantly wider than the original sidewalk in order to accommodate a mix of pedestrians and cyclists.

The project is being built with funding support from the Federal Government’s Public Transit Infrastructure Fund and is intended to improve cycling and walking connections across the city.
During construction, signage directs pedestrians to the south side of Eglinton.

Asphalt work is anticipated to be completed by mi-October.
Signal upgrades for cyclists will be completed over the next few months.
