Medical Monday - Prevention and control of infections in the home

Home is where the heart is, so taking steps to reduce the spread of infections and viruses within your home will protect your loved ones.

Here are some helpful tips and reminders to reduce the spread of germs and maintain a healthy and infection-free home.

·         Clean your hands often with using soap and water.  Antimicrobial soaps may decrease the transmission of microorganisms from the hands.

·         If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.  The alcohol works immediately and effectively to kill bacteria and most viruses.

·         Cover your mouth and nose with the bend of your elbow if sneezing or coughing.   If you use your hands, clean them right away.  Turn away from other people that sneeze or cough.

·         Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth as viruses can transfer from your hands and into the body.

·         Do not share cups, glasses, dishes or cutlery.

·         Consider wearing a face mask when you are sick and if you expect to be around other people.  Wearing a facemask also protects your nose and mouth from sprays of fluids from some that is coughing or sneezing.
