Mississauga to introduce shared system of e-bikes and e-scooters in 2024

Despite botching the “fourplex” vote that could’ve helped in our housing crisis, Mississauga City Council decided to smartly support staff recommendations that Mississauga launch a shared micro-mobility program in 2024.

What exactly is micro-mobility?
Micro-mobility is a form of travel using a lightweight device powered by your own body or electricity. Mississauga’s version of shared micro-mobility platform will offer up to 300 electric pedal-assist bicycles (e-bikes) and 900 electric kick-style scooters (e-scooters).
For a fee that has not been determined or shared yet, users will be able to rent e-bikes and e-scooters to navigate through Mississauga and park with flexibility at a station or at a bike rack closest to their destination.

Geoff Wright, Commissioner, Transportation and Works says “We’ll be joining eight other Ontario municipalities with shared micro-mobility systems including Toronto, Brampton and Ottawa.”

Given the absolute horrid traffic conditions with the construction of the Hurontario LRT and frequent construction around the city, providing residents an alternative, hopefully affordable and hopefully reliable method of urban transportation is the right thing to do.

Four years ago, Council supported the recommendation for City staff to look at how a program of shared bikes, e-bikes or e-scooters could be used for travel in Mississauga as part of a Micro-Mobility Program Development Project. Following extensive analysis and community and stakeholder consultation in June 2022, Council approved a recommendation to develop a shared micro-mobility program that offers e-bikes and e-scooters.

Over the next few months, staff will go through the procurement process for an e-bike and e-scooter service provider, and roll out the program in 2024.
