Modern Mississauga presents Ask The City - What outdoor winter activities am I allowed to do in Mississauga under the Stay-at-Home Order?

Modern Mississauga and the City of Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Ask the City.” We’ll share relevant information here and answer your questions about our city.

Today’s question is about outdoor winter activities permitted during Stay-at-Home Orders.

What outdoor winter activities am I allowed to do in Mississauga under the Stay-at-Home Order?

In terms of necessity, exercise and focusing on mental health remains a priority, even while provincewide shutdown and stay-at-home measures are in place.

The City of Mississauga continues to offer a variety of activities that you can enjoy both safely in your home and outdoors. Remember to only socialize with individuals in your household or essential supports, and take precautions like physical distancing (2 metres/6 feet), wearing a face covering and practising proper hand hygiene if you decide to go outdoors.

Check out some of these winter activities that you can enjoy safely outdoors in Mississauga.

Skating

Enjoy the outdoors and our free, fun skate drop-in programs at an outdoor City rink or natural ice rink. Skaters are required to maintain physical distancing of 2 metres/6 feet from other groups; face coverings are required when unable to maintain a safe distance. Change rooms are closed; benches and chairs are set up for skaters to change their skates.

Reservations are required seven days in advance on ActiveMississauga.ca for outdoor rink drop-in fun skates, including Mississauga Celebration Square.

Tobogganing

There are six public toboggan hills you can enjoy from December to March (weather dependent). If the hill is crowded, please visit at another time or try another location.

Trails and Leash Free Parks

Get some fresh air with your furry-friend at one of Mississauga’s eight leash-free zones or enjoy our outdoor trails! Most of City trails receive regular winter maintenance and can be safely used.

Check out our new Lakeview Winter Trail featuring a 2 km loop located on the grounds of Lakeview Golf Course. The trail is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and can be used for walking and snowshoeing (snowshoe equipment is not available).

Public Art

Taken advantage of the City’s public art collection, which has grown to 20 permanent public art pieces and includes ongoing temporary art. There are currently two outdoor art exhibits at Mississauga Celebration Square:

  • The Northern Lightbox presented by TD: this immersive photo op will transport you to the majestic Boreal Forest under the Aurora Borealis!

  • Freeze Frame presented by Bell: strike a pose and share your photos at this immersive photo op!

  • We Are All Here: this outdoor public art installation is at Erindale Park and features flags of watercolour paintings of various animals found in Credit River Watershed.
