Ontario government considering eliminating license plate renewal stickers

As first reported by The Toronto Star.

If you’re a motorist in Ontario, you’re shelling out $120 per year for that tiny sticker that goes on the top right of your license plate.
Doug Ford, according to sources, is considering unsticking this requirement for drivers of passenger vehicles, light commercial vehicles, pick-up trucks, and motorcycles.

Also of note, the Ontario government is navigating possible refunds but the details are those aren’t quite clear yet…kinda like that kerfuffle with those short-lived blue ”A Place To Grow” license plates that couldn’t be seen at night.

Sounds good, right?
Well…the government giveth and also taketh away.
The “takeaway” part being that this move, if implemented, would cost 1 billion in annual revenue.

This move is likely a move into the passing lane seeing as a provincial election happens on or before June 2, 2022.

Due to the pandemic, Ontario drivers haven’t had to renew their stickers since March of 2020, the beginning of the pandemic.
Now, however, the two year grace period is up, with drivers having until February 28th to renew their stickers.

Will this attempted upshift by Ford actually happen, or will it stall like a buck-a-beer and those botched blue license plates?
