Modern Mississauga presents Way Back Wednesday's - The history of Lushes Avenue

Modern Mississauga and Heritage Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Way Back Wednesday’s."
We’ll share information about the history of Mississauga here and answer your questions.
Today’s topic is the history of Goldthorpe Road.

Lushes Avenue, near the intersections Lakeshore Road West and Southdown Road, is named in reference to a former nearby resident, Reuben Howson Lush (1868-1934). Born to a large family in nearby Milton, Reuben moved to the Clarkson area in 1897. He was said to be imposing and energetic, yet gregarious and friendly, with a honest personality and a booming voice.

Reuben was seen as a significant supporter of, and as an unofficial “Lieutenant” for, Sir Adam Beck and the development of hydroelectricity in Ontario. Reuben was instrumental in the bringing of hydro to historic Mississauga. He served as Reeve of Toronto Township in 1912-13, Justice-of-the-Peace in 1924 and 1925, and as Toronto Township Hydro Commissioner in 1917-18, 1921-23 and 1930-34.
