Artist Glimpse: YASSiN & Sean Terrio
/The Ontario-based duo YASSiN & Sean Terrio have built a distinct independent presence since 2019. Meeting at an Oakville open mic, they blended pop, soul, rock, and R&B into a signature sound. Known for using observational humour and viral sketches, their digital platforms have generated nearly 100 million views. Following their 2024 debut Just Try, they are rolling out their sophomore project, Learn + Apply, highlighted by lead single "DON'T DO THAT" and their upcoming August 7 single, "Animal."
Rob Aguiar: Since your partnership began at an open mic night in 2019, how has your creative process evolved from those early, spontaneous sessions into the collaborative songwriting dynamic you maintain today?
YASSiN & Sean Terrio: Yassin here! I think our process is forever evolving. In those early days I was the one bringing all the songs to the table, with a clear idea of how to produce them. What Sean brought was this raw INSANE talent that elevated every idea I’d show up with. Over the years our writing became more collaborative, and we’d dream up many songs together. More importantly, we’ve learned how to bring the best out of each other. Sean has this incredible ability to come up with the most honest and real lyrics, and I know exactly how to build music around it, while I can come up with a hook idea that Sean can take to the stratosphere.
RA: Your sound draws from a wide spectrum—soul, pop, blues, and rock. Are there specific artists or shared listening experiences that serve as a reference point when you are arranging these different influences into a single track?
YST: Not really! Sean and I both grew up listening to a million different genres, as did most of us “Limewire” aged 90s kids. So naturally all those influences come through in our music, but we never sit around while writing and think about “what influence to put where” in a song. Whatever feels right wins, and we try to follow that.
RA: You have successfully integrated comedy and social media sketches into your professional brand. How do you balance the demand for high-frequency comedic content with the requirement to maintain artistic sincerity in your music?
YST: We both wish we had an answer to this haha, we feel like we’re still trying to figure that out. It’s hard because the algorithm wants what it wants, and that can pressure us to spend more and more time in one direction rather than keeping a balance. I guess these are good problems to have, but ask us this in 3 years and hopefully we will have figured our way through it. We’re just trying to do what makes us feel good, while keeping the outside influence to a minimum…easier said than done!
RA: You have spoken about the creative exhaustion that followed the release of your debut album, “Just Try”. In what ways does “Learn + Apply” document your growth or shift in perspective regarding the realities of the music business?
YST: Learn + Apply is the documentary of that creative exhaustion we experienced, while documenting our many attempts to escape it. Each song was recorded, produced, and written in a completely new way—literally an attempt at learning something new and going for it. Thematically, many tracks are about the same thing: being radically honest about how this business and chasing a dream in your thirties feels. Honestly, this “industry” has only let us down as we’ve peeked behind closed doors, and its direction doesn’t represent the art we want to give the world. This album is us learning to accept the circumstances and keep going regardless.
RA: Your recent Instagram teaser for the new track "Animal" leans into a wild, high-energy concept—how does this song fit into the broader sonic direction of Learn + Apply?
YST: Funny enough, this song feels like our bread & butter. There is definitely connective tissue between this tune and an old one of ours, "Take My Time", which isn't only one of our very first songs, but it's by far our most popular. Not saying we were trying to replicate that energy, but songs like this definitely feel like a natural part of what we do!
RA: You have collaborated with artists such as Charissa on the track 'Right Here Right Now.' What do these collaborative efforts offer your creative process that differs from the dynamic you share when writing exclusively as a duo?
YST: Working with Charissa is an absolute dream. We loved every second because it keeps our creative flow fresh and keeps us on our toes. When you have someone as good as Charissa in the studio, you have to bring your A-game. Opening ourselves up to collaboration has really been an amazing thing for us. Sean and I are not only creative partners, but best friends who see each other every day no matter what. That comes with challenges, but to make sure we’re always giving it our all, this has been perfect.
RA: With a busy touring schedule throughout 2026—including appearances at the Rivoli and regional festivals—how are you navigating the balance between the demands of the road and the promotional requirements of your upcoming album?
YST: To make it all work we’ve been sleeping 3 to 4 less hours a night haha. IT IS BUSY. But we’re living the dream. We try to dedicate days to filming all the marketing content we need for 2 months, so we can go on the road and not have to worry. For example, I’m on my in-laws couch right now in Sudbury, prepping for a string of Northern shows, but 2 days ago we spent 12 hours shooting content for a single we have coming out in a few weeks. Honestly the way people promote music nowadays helps a lot. If we had to post a song 3 months in advance, we’d lose our minds.
The career of YASSiN & Sean Terrio serves as a practical model for modern artist development, demonstrating how a combination of consistent, humoured content and dedicated songwriting can build a sustainable, independent career. As they continue to tour throughout 2026 and build momentum toward the full release of “Learn + Apply”, they remain a compelling example of how independent musicians can successfully navigate the evolving demands of the industry.
