Award-winning Production ‘Huff’ comes to Mississauga's Living Arts Centre

‘Huff’ has been described as both wrenching, yet darkly comical. It tells the story of two Indigenous brothers caught in a torrent of continual abuse, while trying to cope with the death of their mother, and it’s told through the imaginative eyes of a child. As their dream world begins to bleed into their reality, the brothers are preyed on by the Trickster in the haunting halls of the old Residential school, throughout the abandoned motel they love more than their own home, and within their own fragile psyches. ‘Huff’ is an unflinchingly honest and compelling story that has been called a masterpiece in the making, and a must-see show.

‘Huff’ is presented by award-winning Indigenous playwright Cliff Cardinal, a new voice in Canadian theatre known for his black humour and compassionate poeticism. If you’re looking for candid, unabashed insight into the struggles of Indigenous communities, look no further. Cardinal makes it clear, “When I perform the show I think about the kids in the story […] with fierce imaginations. I want to do a play that they would love. That’s why there’s so much cussing. That’s why I splash the audience with tomatoes. That’s why I don’t care what people think about it.”

Cardinal’s signature biting wit and raw, vivid imagery have helped his solo plays, ‘Stitch’ and ‘Huff’, win numerous awards and garnered him international praise. ‘Huff’ is a two-time Dora Mavor Award Winner, and a Lustrum Award recipient at the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The Torontoist gave Huff four stars, with NOW Magazine calling it, “strong, uncompromising storytelling,” and the FringeReview saying it’s a “must see show.”
