Access to Education for Teen Pregnancy in Mississauga

A pregnancy is a life-changing event regardless of when it happens but for a teenager, it can potentially completely upset the balance of their development.

If you’ve got a teenager who has gotten pregnant or even one who has reached an age where they’re sexually active, one of the most important things for you to do is make sure that they are educated about teen pregnancy, how to prevent it, how to pick up the early signs and what to do if it happens.

In Mississauga, there are quite a few services and resources available to keep you informed, help you decide what’s best for you, and help you move forward with whatever decision you end up making.

Peel Public Health has resources, including several free prenatal programs women under the age of 25.

These include an e-learning program that offers online classes about childbirth, teen pregnancy and parenting classes. This is great for those who don’t have a flexible schedule or are on bed rest.

The online service is regularly updated and it also offers tools, trackers and checklists to ensure that you can use to organize your thoughts and plans.

Additionally, there’s a hands-on and face-to-face program which is called the teen prenatal supper club, but is also open to any pregnant woman under the age of 25 who is in the area.

Peel Public Health runs this program that allows people to come in, take the classes, meet others who are going through the same experience, and they also provide dinner.

These classes are very in-depth and comprehensive, covering how to stay healthy during your pregnancy and also how to cope with going through labor and the process of giving birth.

There is also a lot of information about what to do after the birth on breastfeeding and cooking quick, healthy and easy meals.

You’ll meet registered nurses, health care professionals and people who have already gone through the experience of an unexpected pregnancy and can help guide you through any concerns you have.

There’s also food vouchers and prenatal vitamins which you can use.
The Vita Centre in Mississauga offers one-to-one counseling as a different resource.

Other considerations can include pregnancy pillows, specially designed maternity clothes and pregnancy massages. There are specific ones for during pregnancy and to help ease the pain afterward.
