Learn about Mississauga's free and first popup film exhibit, Pop Up Shorts

Film is breaking out of theatres and coming to a public space near you. On May 4 – 5, PopUp Shorts will exhibit a curated selection of short films by award-winning filmmakers from Mississauga and Oakville.

Enjoy free continuous animation, music videos, dramas, and documentaries in the spacious lobby of the Clarkson Community Centre, 2475 Truscott Dr, Mississauga. A special screening with popcorn and some of the filmmakers in attendance for a Q&A will take place Saturday, May 5, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

PopUp Shorts is co-hosted by the Oakville Festivals of Film and Art (OFFA) who organize the Willson Oakville Film Festival, and FILMHIVE – Mississauga’s creative hub for filmmakers and media artists.

“PopUp Shorts was inspired by the idea to present film as public art,” explains filmmaker and FILMHIVE founder, Cathleen MacDonald. “Mississauga and the region are home to many film and television professionals whose work wins accolades in Canada and abroad. PopUp Shorts showcases local talent to a hometown audience.”

Adds Wendy Donnan, Executive Director of OFFA, "We are proud to be working with FILMHIVE, and to have the support of a Mississauga Cultural Projects Grant and Oakville Cultural Grants to bring PopUp Shorts to Mississauga. Filmmakers in our communities are so talented and eager to show and talk about their work. We plan to grow this programme to give local filmmakers the opportunity to increase awareness of the power and incredible diversity of short films."

“Mississauga is where it all began,” says participating filmmaker Sid Sawant. “A chance at a better life and a chance to explore the arts. My hopes are to inspire the next generation of film makers.”

The curated selection of 14 short films will screen continuously at the Clarkson Community Centre lobby Saturday May 4, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, May 5, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Learn more at filmhive.org/events
