Mississauga's The Legend of Cedar Park Comic

Modern Mississauga and Heritage Mississauga have come together to present an ongoing series called “Way Back Wednesday.”
We’ll share information about the history of Mississauga here and answer your questions.
Today’s topic is the legend of Mississauga's Cedar Park Comic.

In connection to Black History Month in February, we will explore some of our historic links to early Black history in Mississauga.

Heritage Mississauga is excited to announce the newest comic in The Grange comic book series, entitled “Legend of Cedar Park”. The comic focuses on the story of the Ross family and their home at Cedar Park Farm here in historic Mississauga.

George Woodford Ross, the patriarch of the family, had been born enslaved in Urbanna, Virginia. After being emancipated, George came to Canada in 1834, and in 1836 purhcased a 200-acre farm near the modern intersection of Burnhamthorpe Road and Cawthra Road. Modern Rayfield Park is located on part of what was the Ross’ Cedar Park Farm.

In the story, you will meet George Ross’ wife, Didamia (nee Paul), whose father Benjamin Paul had been a prominent abolitionist and minister at the Wilberforce Settlement, near Lucan, Ontario. Didamia herself had been a school teacher before getting married, and the couple would go on to have 11 children here in what is now Mississauga.

The comic is available for free at The Grange, home of Heritage Mississauga.
