The masters of acrobatics and impressive performances, Cirque du Soleil, have come out with their latest masterpiece, VOLTA. The name itself refers to "a sudden about-face, a change in emotion or idea" as per their press release and simply put, the show was mesmerizing, entertaining and absolutely sutnning.
VOLTA communicates the story about both freedom of choice as well as determining your own route in life. It highlights personal transformation and drills down into being true to yourself, maximizing your own talents and gifts, and the strength of collaboration. VOLTA blends action-packed acrobatics and I-cannot-believe-that-was-humanly-possible athletics, with a soundtrack of mood-following music by their talented musicians.
The short version, again according to their press releas:
"WAZ, a popular gameshow host, has lost touch with his inner self in the pursuit of fame. But as doubt sets in, WAZ is enlightened by childhood memories as he encounters free spirits, who open doors to his inner soul he has long kept shut. On his high-voltage search for meaning, will WAZ find the courage to relinquish his fame, reconnect with his true self, and shine bright?"
While that's a solid description, buying tickets to the show amplify that a million times over as you follow WAZ's story through jumps, lunges, BMX bike tricks, diving and well, you get the point.
My big takeaway from VOLTA was more the story of choice than anything else. Yes, the physical component wowed the entire audience but the narrative is the real show-stopper here.
