The road was planned as a major arterial road (a kind of an internal highway) anchoring the Erin Mills New Town development by Cadillac Fairview Corporation.

Thomas Street in Streetsville is not named for a son of Timothy Street, or for any member of the Street family. The road takes its name from one Thomas Paterson (1820-1860.)

In the early years of settlement in Streetsville the community lacked a formal cemetery. Timothy Street sought to rectify this situation and on February 24, 1824, he donated part of his land to the Presbyterian congregation for use as a burying ground for all Protestant denominations and for a church.

The date was Sunday, July 13, 1980. and his path through Mississauga took him along Lakeshore Road.
