Modern Entrepreneur Profile: Mississauga's Braedon Kwok
/In conversation with Braedon Kwok, recipient of the Mississauga Starter Company Plus grant.
1. What does your company provide/do?
Grandads Nuts makes Caribbean style roadside peanuts with a secret recipe originated from my grandfather. We offer plain and spicy flavors, with plans to diversify and create new flavors. We aim to sell their products at events, online, and in grocery stores, with a focus on quality and community involvement.
2. What inspired you to start your company?
When my grandfather moved to Canada from Guyana, he couldn't find his beloved roadside peanuts anymore. So, he figured out how to make them himself and would share them with family and friends. As a toddler, I'd munch on Grandad's Nuts, and years later, at 13, I had an epiphany while driving with my mom, why not sell them as hostess gifts for Christmas? I asked Grandad to teach me the recipe, Mom took me to Walmart for mason jars, and Dad helped with the logo on Microsoft Paint. Now, I'm eager to take the business to the next level.
3. What's been the most impactful lesson you've learned being an entrepreneur?
I have learned a lot of lessons but the one of most impactful lessons I’ve learned is actually from my other grandfather, “Your name is the most important.” Meaning, above anything else, your reputation is the most important this you could have as an entrepreneur, without putting your best foot forward and good reputation, people will not take you seriously. Money can come and go but the way you act and treat others is most import.
4. How do you unwind?
I unwind by playing sports like volleyball and badminton, playing video games occasionally, talking walks and spending times with my friends and family.
5. What succinct advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Stick to your idea and trust in yourself. Believe in your vision and don’t give up, don’t let other people sway you from your goals.
6. What are your goals for 2026?
My goals for 2026 are to get into grocery stores, sell and ship online, grow my social media platforms and continue to grow my brand.
7. How did the Mississauga Starter Company Plus program help you start or expand your business?
Starter company Plus has helped me organize my business, building the foundation for me to grow and expand. It has also helped me network and meet with a bunch of great and knowledgeable people. The experience at this program is invaluable to me and I have a huge appreciation for the people in and a part of it.
