Technology to keep your home safer

With travel slowly opening up again and travel season upon us, chances are many of us will travel, regardless of medium and distance.
Whether you’re away for one night or one week, it’s key to keep your home safe in your absence.
With the abundance of modern technology, there are many ways to enjoy your time away without worrying about what’s happening at home.

Security cameras
The peace of mind that comes with moving pictures via a security camera is worth the investment. Let’s not think the worst of anyone but if someone does make bad decision to try and upset your home, having a camera system is a strong deterrent.

Motion detectors
These come in handy as they can activate indoor and or outdoor lights if someone gets too close to your place. There’s plenty of settings and some are smartphone compatible.

Light timers
Instead of your home being dark after daylight when you’re away, having your lights go on via schedule can lower the risk of an unwanted visitor. Consider picking alternate times if you’re away for a few days in a row to avoid the predictability.

Connect with your alarm company
A quick call to let them know what you’re up to vacation-wise can have your account flagged (in a good way) so that if anything does happen, they can act/react accordingly.

Video doorbell
I’ve got one of these from Ring and I feel with the popularity, ease of use and advanced technology, these could one day replace conventional security cameras.
Directly connected to your smartphone, there are options for two-way conversations, motion sensors and you can keep a history of activity.

Have music playing via your smart speaker
If would-be thieves/burglars sense there’s someone in the house, they may be less likely to intrude. Having music playing gives your place a “lived in” sense and can help deter them.

Smart lock
They’re kinda big and bulky but what they lack in grace they make up for in functionality.
They’re also easy to network with your other smart home security systems for an added layer.
Additionally, there are ones that work with your fingerprint, which is kinda cool.
