Learn about the 2023 Humble & Hungry Festival happening in Mississauga

In conversation with Vivek Mehmi, organizer of the Humble & Hungry Festival (H&H.)

What inspired H&H?
Our story comes from humble beginnings. At the time that we decided to turn Humble and Hungry from a motto to a movement we were starting from scratch. We had little experience in performances and hosting but we were motivated by our creativity, imagination and desire to grow as artists. However, as any artist knows, it’s often very difficult to get an opportunity or a platform to showcase their work. Realizing this, we wanted to create an outlet to give opportunities not only for our in house talent but for others just beginning and starting to make a name for themselves. We are humble enough to stay grounded and grateful but hungry for every presented opportunity. Humble and Hungry started as a state of mind that evolved into our modus operandi.

What exactly does H&H do?
Humble and Hungry is an initiative that offers exposure and resources to help develop the skills of aspiring artists and musicians. Through play listings, indie features, industry interviews, streaming talk shows, hosting, performing, coaching, facilitating events and social media networking, we are creating a platform and community to help artists grow. Our agenda is inclusivity; we welcome talent from all walks of life and feature artists and musicians from all genres. Our projects are designed to uplift the community and often include a charitable component or spotlight on a subject that deserves attention (Arts for India, Mental health and wellness).

What message do you want attendees to absorb during and after the event?
We want attendees to experience the power of healing through art and music. When we all come together with a shared vision and intention, the impact ripples further. We want to raise awareness to something that everyone of us face and offer tools and community support. In any given year,1 in 5 Canadians experience some form of mental illness. By the time Canadians reach 40, 1 in 2 had or have a mental illness. We also want attendees to feel pride in their community and the talent that comes from it. Some of our artists are familiar but for others, this is a new opportunity to perform in front of a new audience. Our event will allow artists to expand their audience and for the community to be introduced to new music.

Why does this mean so much to you?
I’ve been on a healing journey so this initiative is very close to my heart. This year we have seen the positive impact that having open conversations and sharing stories can have. Whether we were teaching a vocals course, speaking at an event, or working as mentors, we witnessed the healing power of art.

From an operational stand point, we have been successful in other similar projects but nothing of this nature and we feel that this experience, the knowledge gained, and lessons learned, will be invaluable with respect to the future growth of Humble and Hungry. More importantly, we value the importance of relationships, we believe in the team that support us and the talent we work with, and we take pride in the product we deliver. Our efforts are not just for Humble and Hungry but to help elevate the talent we work with. In the end, success will be achieved if we can showcase quality art that everyone can enjoy.

Which artists will be performing?
Juno nominated Zaki Ibrahim (R&B, Soul, Hip Hop, 70s Pop),
Plus Mississauga’s own: The Five and Tens (Jazz, Soul, Funk, Rock) Carla Casanova (Latin) Vivek Mehmi (Hip Hop), Gee (Hip Hop, R&B, DJing), Nissar (Indian-Western Fusion, Rock, Folk), Nikki Tugui and Jennifer Cortez (Sound healing) T.E.K. Crew (Breakdancing) School of Rock Streetsville - Adult Band.

Will this be a once a year event or are there plans to increase frequency?
Ideally this event will grow to a once a year occasion. Each year, we would build the event until it becomes a staple in the community, a reason to come together and celebrate which isn’t motivated by a holiday or landmark event. Further to this project, Humble and Hungry will continue to participate in different events spread throughout the calendar year. This includes hosting workshops, performing, coaching other talent and supporting the community.

How would you describe the H&H Music Fest to a stranger in 30 words or less?
A free music event featuring an eclectic line up of talent performing an assortment of genres with a goal to entertain, while also bringing awareness to mental health and wellness.

The Humble & Hungry Festival happens August 20th, 2023 at Streetsville Square, Mississauga.
